Home & Land
The proximity to the city of Auckland makes Rodney an attractive area to live but within easy commuting distance of major employers.
Combine that with a stunning natural landscape, including 1,426 kilometers of coastline and safe swimming beaches, regional parks, entertainment attractions, and an enjoyable climate, and the Rodney District offers a unique and attractive lifestyle. And with the new Northern Gateway motorway extension open, commuting is now easier than ever.
Eastern Rodney (Hibisicus Coast)
Historically, the Hibiscus Coast grew up as a retirement area and as a holiday "playground" for Aucklanders. Many beautiful and safe beaches make the Coast a big attraction. Gulf Harbour on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, is host to the second largest marina in the Southern Hemisphere with 996 berths as well as a well renowned international golf course. The Hibiscus Coast is now a well established and sought after urban area with a population of 28,390 and growing, but it retains a high proportion of retired folk living within it.
With the Northern Gateway toll road now open, commuting is easier than ever, and the through traffic in Orewa has been dramatically reduced. Orewa Beach is the commercial heart of the Hibiscus Coast and Rodney district, a bustling Holiday Resort that boasts one of the finest beaches in New Zealand.
Central Rodney
The idyllic Central Rodney area contains the communities of Coatesville, Waitoki and Wainui. Central Rodney offers all the benefits of rural lifestyle living, whilst being in easy reach of Auckland.
Western Rodney
The south-western part of our District includes the communities of Helensville and Kumeu/Huapai, as well as the smaller settlements of Riverhead and Waimauku. As a result of its proximity to Auckland, lifestyle blocks are very popular but horticulture, winemaking and forestry are also important to the local economy. The Western ward also boasts The Kaipara Harbour, the largest enclosed harbour in the southern hemisphere.
Northern Rodney
The northern part of our District contains the Warkworth, Wellsford and Snells/Algies Bay communities and there are a number of smaller coastal and inland settlements. Lifestyle blocks, retirement housing and holiday baches are features of the north but primary production (including dairying) is still very significant and forestry occupies about 29,579 hectares.
Matakana
Matakana has a range of boutique wineries and a thriving local art scene. It is a relatively new wine-growing region, and its wineries are acclaimed for their chardonnay, pinot gris and classic red varieties. There is a weekly farmers' market showing off the best of the area's produce.
Puhoi
In the historic bohemian village of Puhoi, there are original buildings, including the iconic Puhoi Pub - a local institution and a museum in its own right. Puhoi is also home to a popular cheese factory and cafe, and it is the start point for canoe trips down the Puhoi River.
Warkworth
Further north is the riverside township of Warkworth, home to Parry Kauri Park and a great selection of riverside cafes. From here it is only a few minutes to Sandspit, where ferries depart for Kawau Island.
Omaha
The landscape from Puhoi to Pakiri is dotted with deserted bays, small islands and recreational reserves. Follow the winding gravel road to beautiful Tawharanui Regional Park or stop at Omaha to enjoy the white sand beaches and waves.
Goat Island
Goat Island Marine Reserve, near Leigh, is a great place to explore the amazing underwater environment. You can join a dive charter or hire snorkelling gear, or if you want to stay dry, take a tour of the reserve in a glass bottom boat.
Pakiri
Pakiri Beach is a breathtaking surf beach that stretches as far as the eye can see. Guided horse treks can take you along the beach or through the nearby forest.
