Taupo's holiday appeal attracts retirees seeking a relaxed outdoor

Taupo's holiday appeal attracts retirees seeking a relaxed outdoor

A flat section, easy living and an outlook onto Lake Taupo are just some of the lifestyle features enjoyed by Terry and Stan Hall, who have moved south from a two-storey house in Titirangi within busy Auckland.

Now the happy couple are treating every day in Taupo like a holiday. The Hall’s had lived in the same house in Queen City for 43 years but say they are part of a drift away from the city sprawl and traffic problems.

Finding a section in Coprosma Crescent near Waipahihi Botanical Reserve, and partnering with national top 10 builder Generation Homes were major highlights in the couple’s journey to build their dream home.

Quote from Terry Hall
We’re certainly full of good words toward Generation Homes. As far as we’re concerned we couldn’t say anything else. We’re just so happy with the build.

GH

What options were going through your mind when you chose Taupo as your new home away from Auckland?

TERRY

With house prices rocketing and a rush hour that never stops, we didn’t want a new build in Auckland. The traffic is diabolical. We thought we might as well get out and find somewhere new.

STAN

There is a huge halo effect of people moving out of a big city. Smaller places like Paeroa, Waihi and Thames are being chosen as alternatives.

GH

How did you come across Generation Homes?

TERRY

We had friends use Generation Homes for their new build in Papamoa, near Tauranga. They were the ones that told us about Generation, so we went and saw one of their showhomes in Riverhead, Auckland. When we went inside we were sold. We loved the wide hallway, the finishing and the particular way this house was set out.

GH

Describe your experiences in dealing with Generation Homes Rotorua/Taupo staff?

TERRY

We have worked a lot with Regional Director Paul Marshall, who has been so helpful. Interestingly he was behind the design of the Riverhead showhome so that was a great starting point. Paul has helped out so much with suggestions.

GH

In the design phase was it easy to change some features within the house?

STAN

The local council was selling some of the sections. We’d found one, then we checked with Generation Homes if they’d be willing to build on it.

TERRY

The section is long and narrow at points so we had the best possible features to fit the land. We had quite a few things that we chopped and changed so it ended up taking longer than it normally would, but that was a good thing because we were able to achieve what we wanted.

GH

What design elements in particular did you introduce to the house?

TERRY

We have a long hallway leading down to areas like the bathroom, laundry and three bedrooms, one being used as an office study. We’ve got those little runway lights along the bottom walls along the hall and they look great.

GH

What colour schemes did you choose for the property?

TERRY

We went for a black and white theme. The walls are a very light shade of grey then we have slightly darker doors. The carpet is a very dark shade, almost black, but with some white flecks. The tiles have swirls of grey through – they look beautiful.

The outside walls are black brick with white Linea board and the roof is black Coloursteel. There is a lot of pine tree pollen in our area so the steel results in a much cleaner look. We’ve got tinted grey glass windows and they look fantastic.

GH

What are some of the key features of the property?

TERRY

All of the living rooms and the bedrooms face north so we’ve got beautiful sunlight coming through. We can see the lake from our lounge area and to south we can see Mount Tauhara. We’ve included ranch sliders off most of the house leading on to decking. There is also a shaded alfresco area for me as I don’t like too much direct sun.

GH

What choices have you made in the outside living areas?

STAN

The building team raised up the section around the house so walking is flat and easy. We’ve used a good amount of pavers and we’re finishing off with an easy care garden. It will include pebbles rather than bark, and natives or other plants that are easy to maintain.

TERRY Paul suggested these great big boulders to do a retaining wall around the front instead of wood and that area looks amazing. We’ve also got a very big garage attached to the house, because Stan likes plenty of room for his projects.

GH

Does the property and surrounding environment offer ease of living?

ANN

Personally I feel as though I’m on holiday every day, in a real getaway destination. During summer we will be going down to the beach with our daughter and son-in-law’s family. I also like to go for a short stroll by the lake, whereas Stan will go for a longer walk. There’s a coffee cart down there so I can sit and read and have a look at the lake.

GH

How is it being relatively new to a community? Have you fitted in?

STAN

Taupo’s a bit like the Queenstown of the north. The scenery is different but it is just as spectacular and has a really friendly atmosphere.

TERRY

I’ve joined what they call the 60s-Up club here. We often go for lunch or a bit of an outing. We do like to go out for dinner. Down here they’ve got a pretty active Cosmopolitan Club so we’re looking at joining up with that. Taupo has a very laid back lifestyle and we absolutely love it.

GH Would you recommend Generation Homes to friends and family?
STAN I’ve been involved in construction in one way or another for a couple of decades and talked to a lot of people about what we wanted. That started things off in our search for a builder and Generation Homes proved a wise choice absolutely.
TERRY We’re certainly full of good words toward Generation Homes. As far as we’re concerned we couldn’t say anything else. We’re just so happy with the build.
