The KiwiBuild scheme aims to provide 100,000 affordable, quality houses over the next decade, half of which will be available in Auckland. But with a price tag of $650,000 for a three-bedroom home in Auckland, just how affordable are these homes?
Generation Homes Chief Executive Kevin Atkinson isn’t convinced the KiwiBuild programme will get first-time buyers into homes.
"My view is that $650,000 isn't affordable. At the end of the day, you’re talking, in Auckland, 14 times income. That's just ridiculously high,” Atkinson told Newstalk ZB’s Mike Hosking.
“I think one of the key problems is that we keep talking about affordable homes but we should be talking about affordable land.
“Most builders will tell you they can build an affordable home. Finding an affordable piece of land to put it on is the issue.”
