Pantone Colour of the Year for 2020
Posted on 19 Dec 2019

On trend decorators will be looking carefully at Classic Blue, now that it’s been named Colour of the Year for 2020 by Pantone, the global authority on colour.

The timeless shade, also referred to as Pantone 19-4052, was chosen for its simplicity and elegance. It is described by Pantone as being a reassuring and peaceful colour that instils calm, confidence and connection.

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute, says Classic Blue is a “solid and dependable hue we can always rely on” and “a boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky”.

Pantone’s Vice President, Laurie Pressman, told Time Magazine that 2020’s colour is comforting and relatable.

“We’re returning to classics because everything has been chaotic in the world,” says Laurie. “It’s not about doing it like you did in the past, but reinterpreting it.”

International design experts suggest the shade makes a strong statement on its own, or when paired with warm neutrals and classic whites. News and lifestyle site Insider.com spoke with leading interior designers who recommend using Classic Blue on a bold feature wall, on kitchen or bathroom cabinets, or in the form of a large sofa or rug.

Pantone’s Colour of the Year was founded in 2000. The selection process is based on international trends in fashion, travel, lifestyle and society. The Colour of the Year in 2019 was Living Coral, inspired by the sustainability movement.

Blue – which features prominently in Generations Homes’ own colour scheme – is a common feature in design trends for the year ahead.

Generation Homes’ national paint supplier, Dulux, has included various shades of blue in its 2020 colour forecast. The company states that living with tonal shades of blue helps to create a peaceful and calm space. It also says rooms feel larger when they are painted in lighter shades such as Dulux Kairakau Beach and Cameo Blue Half.

Vibrant, clean colours like the striking Dulux Master Blue can create a key highlight and, in open spaces, help to divide the room into functional zones, according to Dulux.
