Generation Homes sponsors iconic 'Sand to Surf' event

24 October 2017

National award-winning top 10 residential builder Generation Homes has secured the naming rights of Tauranga’s annual Sand to Surf event until 2020.

As the fifth event in the Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series, the Generation Homes Sand to Surf will be held at Mt Maunganui’s Main Beach on March 10.

Generation Homes Chief Executive Kevin Atkinson was attracted to the national swim series because the event provides opportunities for active people who love the sun and surf to connect with likeminded people in their community.

“As an established New Zealand-owned company with more than 20 years’ building experience, we felt the Sand to Surf event was a natural fit for us because so much of our iconic Kiwi lifestyle is centred on the beach and being safe in the water,” he said.

“The Mt Maunganui event presents a chance for experienced and novice competitors to earn their swim stripes as part of the Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series. It is a badge of honour which many locals wear with pride.”

Generation Homes was established in Tauranga in 1997, and is focused on building affordable, quality houses without compromising on design. The company has built more than 4000 new homes nationwide.

The Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series was established by Quantum Events Limited in 2006, but this is the first year local businesses have had the opportunity to secure title sponsorship of regional events. Banana Boat stepped up to be the national event’s major naming rights sponsor this season.

Quantum Events Limited Managing Director Scott Rice wanted to diversify the national swim series by partnering with major brands around the country.

“It’s great to have an established, reputable brand like Generation Homes on board,” he said.

“Generation’s sponsorship of the Mt Maunganui event will allow us to spread the net wider and attract more competitors from around the country because we have a larger budget to promote the event. We saw an opportunity to diversify our regional events by partnering with brands that share our strong family and connected community values.”

The Generation Homes Sand to Surf event attracts more than 1000 swimmers and around 1500 to 2000 spectators every year.

The event has four event categories including the 200m OceanKids swim (children aged 7-12 years), 500m Give it a Go (eight years and above), 1000m Step it Up (10 years and above), and 2.6km I’m Going Long (12 years and above).

Participants can enter on the day if online entries haven’t sold out prior. It is recommended to register online before the event to avoid disappointment. Entry prices start from $25.
